History of Herbal Medicine

History of Herbal Medicine image

The fine art of herbal medicine, or herbalism, is a practice mainly based on the utilisation of various plant and herbal extracts and the healing or health properties that each will possess. As well as purely herbal extracts, herbal medicine can be extended to include various fungus or bee products, minerals, shells and even parts of various animals. As long as it is deemed all-natural or a product of nature, then it could be considered as a main branch or even an off-shoot of herbal medicine.

The reason that plants and herbs are so widely used is because many of these organic objects will synthesise substance and materials that can be of use or are otherwise beneficial to the human body, so are therefore highly sought-after for their healing properties and organic nature.

Herbalism in general has been around for many thousands of years, dating back over 5,000 years ago all the way back to the Sumerians. Even Ancient Egyptian medicine was largely based around herbs and the healing properties they were thought to bestow upon whoever they were applied to.
